In my hypothesis it stated that “If the dish soap, vinegar& baking soda, ten cotton balls and a sponge were used to clean up an oil spill, then the amount of oil absorbed and contained would be large and the dish soap would be most successful at absorbing and containing.” In the experiment dish soap and vinegar& baking soda were poured into the washing basin, the cotton balls were skimmed over the surface whilst the sponge was dipped in. then observations were made. The Independent variables used were the materials, the dependent variable was the oil spill and the controlled variables were the amount of oil and water used in experiment. For the results of the experiment the dish soap contained 75% of the oil spill with the water and therefore was the most effective material whilst the sponge and Vinegar& baking soda were least effective as they absorbed and contained the least amount of oil spill. The cotton balls proved my predictions correct as it absorbed 35% of the oil spill with the water and so proved to be the best absorbing material for the mixture.
