The book "the outsiders" is a book about war between two gangs . this book seems to have a strange connection with "Romeo and Juliet" because it was  about war with two enemies and they fought till the death. towards the books the connection is the war between the gangs and the blood brothers in Romeo and Juliet.

There is also a connection at the part between sadness and sorrow and not wanting the fight. The other part is the fear and emotion that comes around Ponyboy when he gets into a fight with a bunch of Socs. he gets beaten up and has very little hope until rescued by his brothers the rest of the gang.

1.) What is the "big idea" (theme) in this book?
The theme in this book is  of a boy named Ponyboy who having lost his parents has only his brothers Sodapop and Darry the three brothers are in a gang called the Greasers who have a strong rivalry with another gang called the Socs. they has been conflict between the two gangs for as long as Pony can remember but he does not like the conflict between the two and like many people he is a lover not a fighter. He is also deeply afraid of the Socs and having lost two member of the gang who are luckily not his brothers Sodapop and Darry he experiences just how cruel the world can be.
2.)What were your thoughts, ideas and opinions about the "big idea" before beginning this novel?
Well, judging by the cover of the book I could tell it was about war and conflict like in the book "Private Peaceful" I also figured out it was about three boys who I made out to be brotherly related. But I did not know there was more to this story than war and the threesome of brothers.
3.)What do you think now?
I think the book is about conflict between the two gangs the Greasers and the Socks along with the deaths of Johnny and Dally two loved ones. Ponyboy could not handle this happenings and his grades started to slip. It is also about what Ponyboy thinks about the rivalry with the Socs and what Ponyboy thinks about the world and experiencing how cruel the world can get.
4.) In the novel, the world is a better place because...(How has the world of your novel changed. How is it different from the beginning of the book?)
At the beginning of the book the world was a cruel place and was filled with gangs that committed murder unto those they hated. For example, the Socs threatened to slice Ponyboy's throat killing him as he was a greaser. they could tell he was a greaser by his greasy hair. As we go further into the book there are a couple of deaths and Sodapop would take Ponyboy anywhere that he was not taking girls. Towards the end of the book the world is more understandable and it seems that some people from both gangs want peace as well.

Riots in Vancouver
Would Ponyboy have joined in the Vancouver Riots?
I think that Ponyboy would not have joined in the Vancouver Riots because Ponyboy is not really into stealing and getting into fights. He got into a fight with the Socs and he was absolutely terrified, he could not look after himself and since his parents are deceased, it just him and his brothers Sodapop and Darry. If Pony cannot look after himself then how can he possibly steal and be able to cause riots in Vancouver and get away with it. even Ponyboy would admit that he is not really all tough and that it was something he believed he was never going to achieve. Ponyboy was crying a lot after his fight with the Socs and how they threatened to kill him. That is right, the Socs commit murder. It was possibly the worst experience of his life. I think Pony's goal is to get through a peaceful life but it seems simply impossible and he is never going to have the peaceful life he wants and things were never going to be the same since his parents were gone.  He would also be to afraid to take part in the Vancouver Riots after suffering from deaths of his loved ones and not being able to handle it.

1.) First off, why is there a rivalry between the Greasers and the Socs?
2.) Second, where were the cops during the rivalry of Greasers and Socs and their gang fights?
3.)  Thirdly, when a Soc help up a knife to Ponyboy's throat how come there were no cops around to stop this from happening or for someone to at least call the cops?
4.) Fourthly, what do the Socs having against people with greasy hair?
5.) Finally, what does Johnny mean by "Stay gold Ponyboy. Stay gold..."

Sentence 1:
the Socs started the whole rivalry with the Greasers, but I think it is just the way they are. Like the Greasers they always pick a fight with others, steal from banks and shops, get put in prison a lot and pretty much have cops from all over the town after them. Here is how I think the whole thing happened. I think that the Socs were mugging people and came across the Greasers to pick a fight but the war was endless as the Greasers fought back . They have been looking out for each other since. They have from then on known to be sworn enemies as there was not yet a true winner.

Sentence 2& 3:
The cops would obviously have been around as the two gangs were always rubbing and mugging others, but I think that the cops were busy stopping thieves or that nobody called the cops because Ponyboy must have been in some corner away from the city lights, the cops and the sirens at the time of the beatings. Also Ponyboy turned out alright and that the gang did not call the cops as they were one of the most wanted suspected robbers.

Sentence 4:
the Socs can tell their rivals by their greasy hair as the gang Ponyboy is in is called Greasers and they have silky greasy hair glistening which gives them away pretty easily and as I said before I think the Socs were trying to mug the Greasers at the very beginning.

Sentence 5:
I still do not know exactly what Johnny meant but I think it was something like "Stay Cool" or "Be brave" before his death, whatever it was, it was probably to inform Ponyboy that he should be strong and not cry. This is because he knew Ponyboy would suffer from his death of who Pony somewhat cared about. It was more like Ponyboy to remember really.

Picture
This is a picture of a few guys in a gang, beating up a guy in blue. This picture of someone being beaten up reminds me of "The Outsiders". This picture reminds me of that book because the book is about Ponyboy who is in a gang called the greasers whilst another gang called the Socs happen to be their rivals. One day, Ponyboy was walking out side when a bunch of guys in the Socs gang chose to pick a fight with him and beat him up. He had lost all hope when the grand finale to his beatings came. That was right before he was rescued by his brothers Sodapop and Darry, and also by other members of the Greasers. there is also this quote from the Outsiders "How'd you like that haircut to begin just below the chin?" this is a quote of the Socs threatening Ponyboy. The threatening must also have happened in this picture, a threat and then a gang fight.

December 19th: complete the novel

1.   What is the title of the novel you are reading?
                   The Outsiders

2.  Who is the author?
          S.E Hinton

3.  What clues does the cover give to the story?
I think it the outsiders is a sad story because the cover shows faces of men and women pulling unhappy face. I also think it is a war story because the cover also shows buildings set on fire and the two images together make me believe that the story is very old.

4.  Make a prediction about the ending.
I think that people would suffer from death of another person close to them after the war if it is about war.
